What is TENS and How Does It Work for Pelvic Pain?

TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) is a non-invasive pain relief method that uses gentle electrical impulses to stimulate nerves and block pain signals from reaching the brain. For pelvic pain, such as period cramps or endometriosis-related discomfort, TENS helps relax muscles, improve blood flow, and trigger the release of endorphins—your body's natural painkillers. By targeting specific pain areas like the lower back or abdomen, TENS provides fast and effective relief without the need for medication or as an adjunct to prescribed treatments.

How To Use the Tap Tens Machine

1. Attach the sticky pad or electrodes to the desired area.

2. Turn on the device and select your mode.

3. Experience fast, effective relief from pain.

High Frequency

Mode 1 - High frequency continuous - steady vibration feeling

Mode 2 - High frequency burst - rhythmic vibration

Low Frequency

Mode 3 - Low frequency continuous - deep basal tapping

Mode 4 - Low frequency burst - rhythmic drumming

Bladder Mode

Mode 5 - 10Hz, 210uS

TENS therapy can also be effective in managing overactive bladder symptoms, such as urgency and frequency. By placing the pads on the tibial nerve near your ankle (a technique known as TTNS) or over the sacrum, TENS stimulates nerves that help regulate bladder activity. This gentle, non-invasive approach may offer relief and improve bladder control. Speak with your pelvic floor physiotherapist to determine if TENS is a suitable treatment option for you.

TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) is generally safe, but it may not be suitable for everyone. Avoid using TENS if you have any of the following conditions unless advised by a healthcare professional:

  • Pacemakers or Other Implanted Electrical Devices: TENS may interfere with their function.
  • Pregnancy (Early Stages): Avoid use over the abdomen or pelvis unless prescribed by a medical professional.
  • Epilepsy: Electrical stimulation could trigger seizures in some cases.
  • Open Wounds or Irritated Skin: Do not place TENS pads over broken skin or areas with active infections.
  • Cancerous Lesions: Avoid applying TENS near or over tumors, as it may stimulate growth.
  • Cardiac Conditions: Avoid using near the chest or heart area, especially if prone to arrhythmias.
